The development began in Norway in 2012 by engineering students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in cooperation with occupational as well as physio therapists and the user group.

The result was the award-winning AssiStep.

The AssiStep stair aid consists of a handrail which is mounted along the wall as well as a handle which comes with a patented locking mechanism.

The handle is positioned in front of the user who then moves the handle along the railing for extra support and safety. The AssiStep can be used with either both hands on the handle or with one hand on the handle and one hand on the railing.

The user can adjust the positioning of the hands in accordance with his or her personal preference.

Ergonomic grip:

  • one hand
  • combination of handrail and handle
  • use the vertical part of the handle

During the installation process the height of the handle will be customized to the height of the user and can later on be adjusted if needed - in case of the user being a child and is still growing for example.

We have developed the AssiStep to blend in with your home in the most unobtrusive way. The stair aid AssiStep is manufactured in Norway and only high-quality materials, such as

anodized aluminum

&

stainless steel

are being used.

The whole system takes as little space as possible and the handle folds in towards the wall if not in use. This keeps the stairs free to be used by other people as well, which profit from the AssiStep handrail.

Before the launch of the AssiStep it was tested and certified in 2015 by the TÜV –the renowned German inspection and certification company.

AssiStep, the stair aid for elderly people and people with limited mobility provides the user with the extra safety and support that the handle gives as well as with daily activity to stay mobile and active – all in your own home.

The users benefit from using the AssiStep as a training device and a gait trainer in addition to it helping make the stairs easier for elderly people and people with certain ailments such as:

stroke patients,
people who have multiple sclerosis,
people who have cerebral palsy,
people who suffer from Parkinson’s,
people who suffer from neuropathy,
people with incomplete paraplegia,
or people who suffered bone fractures due to - for example - a previous fall.

AssiStep is also used by health professionals throughout Norway in rehab centers and similar institutions in order to train the stairs together with patients – in a safe and supportive manner.

The stair aid offers a very good safety precaution for the patient but nonetheless for the therapist as well. It is used in for example stroke rehabilitation and gait rehabilitation to build up the gait function faster.

Alternative to a stair lift

The stair aid AssiStep is an inexpensive alternative to a stair lift for people who are still able to use the stairs but require additional safety and support.
